THE PLAN OF ATTACK

Road to Routeburn – Week 7/37

It’s got to the point in my training where I know what day of the week it is by what I need to get done. Mondays = recovery run, Tuesday = personal training, Wednesday = short(ish) run, etc etc, which (as a creature of habit) I find quite comforting. I like the structure of it all.

In our household, I’m the planner. If I have a trip coming up there are lists and I’m ready at least a week in advance because I hate running around trying to find things at the last minute. James on the other hand is more of the “I’ll pack just before heading out the door kind of guy” which is why I ended up having to buy a him a jacket the time he flew down to meet us for a climbing trip in near zero temperatures without anything warm to wear.

But he’s cute so after my initial meltdown, all is (generally) forgiven. It’s definitely not forgotten though – I’ll often remind him “about the time I had to buy a jacket” when I’m trying to get him to pack ahead of time.

Generally speaking, I don’t mind planning everything, at least I know that everything should run smoothly which in turns means I get to relax more on our trips. For example, next weekend we head to Tekapo. I’m doing the 16km event and James is going to smash the 32km.

Both events require carrying compulsory gear. As I’ve done a lot of hiking/camping, I had everything I’d need, so I just ensured it would all fit in my vest and would run fully laden on my weekly long run to get used to the additional weight. I then organised everything that James would need along with a larger capacity vest and pestered him into running at least a couple of times with a full pack so he’d have an idea of how cumbersome it would be to carry it all which according to James was “very” lol.

I even know what outfit I’m going to wear, it’s all about the photos after all. James on the other hand will go with whatever he’s thrown in the suitcase as he walked out the door .. 😉

Chalk and cheese!

Till next time

Weekly mileage 32.1 (which included my longest run to date of 15.35km)!
