RACE WEEK – TEKAPO
Road to Routeburn – Week 8/37
As it’s a race week – I only had two very short running sessions to do before the event “proper” on Saturday at Lake Tekapo.
I was taking on the 16km event – which would be my longest run ever (at least in this lifetime of running). I did complete a pretty hilly half marathon back in 2016 where I trained for four months along the completely flat Auckland waterfront .. some lessons are learned the hard way. 😉
Anyway back to the present ..
Getting to Lake Tekapo is an event all on it’s own.
We left on Friday, flew to Christchurch then drove 3.5 hours to Lake Tekapo. Thankfully even though it had been snowing a few days prior to our arrival, we were super lucky with the weather and had no disruptions to our travel plans. It was however very cold. I can see why Southerners are such a hardy bunch of humans!
I wanted to finish the 16km in 2:32 and the official finishing time was 2:11:03 which I was pretty stoked with. You can read a race recap HERE.
Training wise, I’ve been signed off from physio but just need to keep doing glute strengthening work to ensure I don’t have any further hip issues. I’ve been weight training at the new “Simplicity Fitness” by Boulder Co which I really like as it’s always empty, I’m also still seeing Miss Jo and she makes me do 85% of the things I don’t want too .. I do however get away with saying no .. I’m pretty sure I’m the only client that does. 😉
Next Tuesday I’m heading to Wellington as a parent helper on Elias’ school trip so I’ll get virtually no training done. We’ll see how it goes – I’m taking some gym gear just in case, there is actually a City Fitness in central Wellington so I might be able to sneak in a session .. ?
We shall see.
Till next time
