5-3-1-Go!

I’ve been conspicuous in my absence from the daily WOD classes at CrossfitHPU lately.

Most people have just presumed I’d been “saving” myself during the Open season but I’m not sure how you save yourself for something that you have no idea is about to happen. You wouldn’t get any training done! 😉

The reason for my absence is, I’m lifting heavy stuff and putting it back down again. Simple. I had great gains on my first cycle of Wendler’s 5/3/1 strength program and I’m currently in week 3 of my second cycle.

I recall when I spoke to Coach G about strength training he said “You’ll need to cut down your metcons to 1 or 2 a week”.

At the time I brushed the notion off obviously Coach G was a lunatic. Only 1 or 2 metcons a week?!?! However although Crossfit specialises in not specialising, if you want to be strong(er) you should spend some time doing just that .. specialising. 😉

I see why Coach G said 1-2 metcons a week. I lift 4 days out of 7 and since I’m focusing on strength the lifting comes first on those days, although quite often I’ll start out with a walk to a) wake up b) warm up and more importantly c) wait for all the other fuckers people to get off the squat racks.

We have 6 squat racks in our entire gym! We probably have double that number of bench press stations – whats up with that?

Anyway if you’re missing me, come find me. I’ll be hogging a squat rack.

Or better still come and do 14.5 on Saturday with me, I’m going to guess that 14.5 is an ascending ladder of thrusters and burpees and since Dave Castro has upset the millions by including chest to bar pull-ups and rowing, I’ll take a guess and conclude he’ll include pistols, just for the fun of it. 😉

Till next time
