WHAT IS YOUR WHY?

Road to Routeburn – Week 5/37

The week I found “my why”

I’ve been watching the latest series of Match Fit and they often talk about “their why”, the “thing/s” that keep them going when they feel like giving up. For the majority of them it was their kids, they wanted to be around to see them grow up and their current health and fitness levels weren’t conducive to that outcome.

My why?

FEAR

Yep, fear!

Historically, I’ve picked an event / sport and thought, that would be cool, I’ll do that. Then, I’ve trained, competed, continued with the sport then (most of the time) have moved on ..

However, I’ve always picked things I knew without a doubt I could do, even though it may have involved getting a coach and putting in the training. For example, I’ve never thought “oh I should go and do a long distance open water swim” because swimming is definitely NOT in my wheelhouse (even though I’ve got lessons and swam well enough to take part in short triathlon events).

This time however, I’ve picked a SUPER audacious goal and it involves getting to a certain point within a time frame. If you don’t get to that point before the cut off time, you can’t continue.

The Routeburn Classic is a running event. The track is a technical and challenging course. Appropriate training is a requirement for athletes.

YOU MUST REACH Mackenzie Hut (12km mostly up hill) BEFORE THE 11AM CUT OFF TIME (approx 2 and a half hours from the start). Those who do not meet this cut of time will return to the start either with the marshals or in their own time. The marshalls will assist with rides back to Queenstown

Routeburn Classic

I’m honestly not sure I’ll be up to it and that is what gets me out the door when I really can’t be arsed. I want get to that start line, knowing I’ve given myself every opportunity to give it a good nudge. Then, even if I don’t make I’ll know that I did everything I could have to prepare myself and I’ve tried my very best. I’ll just have try again the following year.

One and done would be my preference though. 😉

Till next time

Last week’s mileage 28.82km
